Personality and Abilities

Spyro is a young dragon who is good at heart, curious and eager to find his place in the world, but also largely accepting of the world around him when others aren't suffering...especially those he cares about. He can easily be headstrong and stubborn, either being really hard to dissuade from what he wants or even rushing headlong into dangerous situations when his emotions get in the way of rational thinking. But he is also steadfast and can handle a lot of things that come at him with a cool head.
One of the core traits he has is being impulsive, making him prone to acting on his feelings if not given guidance. Sometimes though his feelings prompt him to ignore that guidance in favor of trusting his instincts. Doing so isn't always the completely proper thing to do, but it is usually what would be considered morally the right choice. Despite this potentially dangerous aspect of his personality, Spyro would never willingly do something that he knows could endanger an innocent as a result.
While not fearless, he doesn't hesitate to rush into a fight he knows can't be avoided, whether the enemy is between him and his true objective or has come after him specifically...and he doesn't hold back in those fights. An enemy may intimidate him at first, but he usually won't back out of a fight just because of that. And he's not easy to intimidate for long, especially when something is at stake. He's completely willing to go to dangerous or unfamiliar places and do what he can to help others.
Because he's still young, he can sometimes brush off bad things that happen once they're resolved, but is also prone to extreme guilt over or refusal to accept tragedy...especially where Ignitus was concerned. In cases where something terrible has happened that he can't just put behind him on his own, someone with a more level head than him might be needed to push him along. Feeling as though he's at fault for not living up to expectation as a purple dragon, not being there for those who are counting on him, is something he's not so good at handling alone yet.
His entire sense of determination through most of the trilogy was because he of what he was, and what that entailed, rather than illusions of self-importance and he is definitely not immune to self-doubt even while trying his hardest to do what's right. As such, he has no big aspirations or dreams of greatness for himself. When on a specific task, Spyro won't entirely ignore those in need but won't detour to do so unless it can't be put off or will benefit his cause in some way...unless it's to help a friend. Otherwise it will have to wait until the larger objective is complete. Helping those who need him is good after all, but stopping too often might allow bad things to happen.
Not burdened by guilt, Spyro is shown to be serious but lighthearted dragon even with the weight of his destiny on his shoulders. He's fairly amiable around others, preferring to get along with them rather than to squabble. He likes to joke and goof around, and is overall polite to others. The level of politeness is especially noticeable in his interactions with his elders. He respects those wiser than him, but will still make it clear that he won't be pushed into doing things he feels is wrong.
Having been raised by dragonflies who have opposable thumbs and more human mannerisms, Spyro is often very animated when he speaks or acts, doing anything from gesturing with his claws to emphasize his meanings to standing on his hind legs and putting a wing to his ear when trying to hear things better. He even uses his wings to cover his eyes if he feels the need to for any reason. It's also likely that he has a taste for butterflies, as his family doesn't seem to have known he was a dragon and wouldn't have known to feed him anything else...and because even after living at the temple among other dragons, Sparx offers him butterflies that he appeared to only turn down because they were in a poisonous swamp at the time.
Abilities
As a rare purple dragon, Spyro's potential is said to be limitless and he has the potential to master any element that he wishes. But aside from being a creature with a huge destiny, Spyro has learned things that are natural to any dragon of his canon. These are mostly melee, flight, and the ability to climb surfaces. His melee combat skills make use of attacks using his tail, claws, and head, and he is capable of knocking somewhat larger enemies into the air to unleash aerial combos on them. This is the best way for him to deal with enemies that can't fly. He's also able to do a ground slamming attack where he slams his tail into the ground or dives headfirst into the ground.
His elemental mastery thus far consists of the four common elements: Fire, Ice, Electricity, and Earth. His initial Earth mastery came with a bit of Wind Mastery, and he was able to master Dragon Time and the Convexity element as well. All of his powers develop into different abilities throughout the series and will be listed below.
Fire:
Spyro's first element mastered and the one he is the most strongly connected to despite not being a fire dragon. Because of this, even if he lacks the power to use any other elements, or the most powerful Fire attacks, he can still puff out small bursts of flame.
Flame Breath: He can breathe flames continuously that, by Dawn of the Dragon, are so intense that burned creatures could spread them to others just by touching them. He had also been able to emit little homing fireballs along with the main flame breath.
Fire Bomb: Launches a flaming projectile, in a mid-range arc, that explodes on contact with anything, enveloping the area within a roughly ten-foot radius of where it hit in flames and raining flaming rocks about the size of a soccer ball onto the area.
Comet Dash: Spyro rams his way through enemies while cloaked in flames. It’s not a long range charge, but he can bash through enemies repeatedly causing serious damage to them.
Fury: Spyro builds up fiery energy and releases it in a sudden intense explosion of fire and flaming rock in a roughly 30-foot radius around himself. Alternatively the fire and rock are released in a burst that spirals outward from beneath him. He remains cloaked in flames for a couple minutes afterwards, allowing him to burn any remaining enemies using just his melee skills.
Ice
His ice element mastery was versatile and used in several ways, allowing for more tactical fighting in battle and the ability to reach places he couldn't easily due to poor flying skills. Most noteworthy, several of the abilities slow enemy movement or freeze them, but don't have that affect on giant or very powerful enemies.
Ice Stream: Breathes a stream of extremely cold fluid that slows and quickly freezes enemies in a fragile coat of ice that smashes with one hit from Spyro or can be escaped within a minute if the enemy is not defeated before then. Some smaller enemies may be encased in giant snowballs and can be rolled around until that moment they break free.
Ice Needle: Spits fast-moving, icy needles that both damages and slowly freezes the opponent. Has a long range and can bounce off of other surfaces a few times before breaking.
Ice Bomb: He launches an icy rock from his mouth that cracks open on impact with anything, releasing a chilling mist in a small area around the impacted area, about 10-15 feet. It makes enemy movement very slow and extended exposure to the mist may freeze weaker enemies in a thin coat of ice like the Ice Stream. Can also freeze small patches of water into temporary platforms too small for for anything much larger than Spyro to stand on.
Ice Tail: Strikes enemies with his tail while channeling ice magic. This knocks enemies back while chilling them and slowing movement. Has a much weaker slowing effect than the other abilities.
Ice Tornado: Spins in midair surrounded by a thin twister of icy air that lifts enemies, spinning them quickly and slowly chilling them to death.
Fury: Frigid energy surrounds Spyro, freezing everything around him. A blast of icy energy then explodes outward, blasting away the ice and enemies. Large enemies or very powerful ones are not frozen, but do take damage from the cold and the blast of energy. Alternatively, a thin sphere of ice forms around him, gathering large icicles across the surface that are then forcefully launched in every direction at the same time. Icy energy cloaks Spyro for a couple of minutes after, allowing him to chill enemies with his melee attacks.
Electricity
Augmented by Spyro's impulsive nature, this elements effects vary widely and can be used for the most different situations. The damage caused in battle is generally the lowest of all the elements, but most weaker and semi-large creatures are unable to attack temporarily after being hit depending on the nature of the attack. Most secondary effects don't work on very large opponents. Outside of battle the electricity could temporarily power something that runs on it.
Electric Stream: Breathes a stream of electricity that can shock enemies stunning them for just a few seconds after. Spyro moving while using this ability results in enemies being thrown around and can be used to throw them off of stuff, against surfaces or into other enemies, or through things like fences.
Electric Cage: Releases a burst of electricity from the mouth that tracks and temporarily traps an enemy in a midair cage of electrical energy about eight feet off the ground. The attack in itself isn't strong at all, but leaves the target open to Spyro attacks for the few seconds that it's active.
Electric Tail: Spyro spins like a top while channeling electricity through his entire body, balancing on his tail. He bumps enemies to do damage, knocking even somewhat big enemies about five feet into the air for a moment. Not really powerful, but repeated blows or an aerial melee while the enemy is airborne could do serious damage.
Electric Shot: Generates an electric orb from his mouth that can be launched a distance. It gives minor shocks on impact, but can also explode in an electrical discharge that damages enemies in a set radius and launches them into the air between five and eight feet. The distance it can be launched, as well as the power and radius of the discharge, depends on the amount of charge in the orb. A fully charged shot can travel in a straight line over 50 feet, giving it the longest range of any attack, and has a blast radius of 10 five feet in every direction. The damage from the blast can be highly damaging, but not enough to kill anything in a single blast. It is also quite solid until it's detonated.
Electrical Discharge: Rapidly discharges high amounts of electricity from his body in a roughly five-foot radius to damage nearby enemies repeatedly. Electric pulses can also be released to increase the damage.
Fury: While electrical energy is building up a large thundercloud is summoned. Multiple lightning bolts strike the ground and anything between, and Spyro releases the energy so it's pushed outward to severely damage anything within 30 feet of him. Alternatively, he gathers electrical energy and releases it in a single, widespread pulse. The electricity continues to spark out of his body for a couple of minutes afterward, allowing him to shock enemies just by striking them.
Earth
Spyro's most powerful basic element. There are no secondary effects to this element, it being pure force to damage and knock back enemies and smash through obstacles. Only large or very powerful enemies can avoid being thrown back by the force of these abilities and a few hits from any one of them is generally enough to kill off average enemies. It's implied that careless use of this element could have severe consequences.
Earth Shot: A blast of earth energy shot from the mouth, can damage and blow back nearby enemies. It has a wide cone-shaped damage zone like a shotgun that reaches about five feet in front of Spyro, making it most dangerous in narrow areas. Its force can smash objects and cracked walls...even explosives can be detonated by accident, though it would blow up in Spyro's face.
Earth Bomb: Launches a shot of earth/wind energy that becomes a small twister to draw in and trap enemies, juggling them at lower heights and then dragging them high into the air and then letting them drop with painful force. Few weaker enemies survive this attack. Large enemies are not harmed by this attack, but can be held in place by it until the twister dies out...the enemy is still perfectly capable of attacking or even killing Spyro though.
Earth Flail: Emits a giant ball made of earth energy from the mouth, connected by a roughly five foot chain of this energy. It can be used to damage enemies or break obstacles simply by spitting it forward repeatedly or spinning rapidly in circles while holding it out. The faster he can spin it the more damage each blow does.
Earth Pound: Spyro quickly slams the ground with a burst of Earth energy to knock nearby enemies into the air. When used in combination with the Earth Flail, Spyro will quickly spin twice after impact, the flail hitting all surrounding enemies.
Earth Missile: Shoots a small missile of earth energy from the mouth to heavily damage an enemy. Fully charged the missile splits into four even smaller ones as it leaves his mouth, allowing a wider range of fire.
Earth Boulder: Spyro surrounds himself in a spiky sphere of earth and rolls around to damage enemies. When hitting the ground from the air it has the same effect as Earth Pound and so can be considered an advanced version of it. It can be used to break through some walls and floors, and Spyro is unaffected by physical attacks while inside. Releasing this power causes the sphere to simply disintegrate as quickly as it formed, only taking a few seconds.
Fury: Spyro summons twisters and falling rocks to damage everything within 30 feet of him. Alternatively, he charges up his energy and releases it in a sphere of leaf-like energy to damage all enemies even airborne ones. At the same time, green waves of energy travel rapidly along the ground to devastate anything they touch. The attack lasts only a few seconds but more than a dozen shockwaves are sent out. The residual earth energy that lingers on him seems to have no effects.
Convexity
Convexity is a purple element that Spyro uses on rare occasion, most notably as a fury in the end of A New Beginning and Dawn of the Dragon. By default it is a powerful beam of purple energy that can decimate enemy numbers in seconds. But, likely because a large amount of energy needs to be accumulated, he hasn't fully mastered this attribute yet. Usually the situation needs to be dire enough to trigger Convexity so that he can hold use of it for more than a couple of minutes...whether he actually uses it or not. Use of it as a Fury completely restores Spyro's magical energies, allowing him full use of his other powers once it deactivates. He was also shown to be able to channel Convexity through his body to enhance the power of his slam attack into something that caused a lot of damage to a more powerful opponent.
Nuclear Claw: Striking enemies with his claws resulted in short bursts of purple energy that increased the damage of his claw-based melee strikes. This ability is nowhere near as devastating as the Convexity breath, but does noticeably increase his damage dealt per strike. It also doesn't draw on his magical energy, allowing him to use in it the absence on any abilities that do.
Dragon Time
From the Chronicler, Spyro gained the ability to drastically slow time on everything but himself. This ability slows time to a crawl for about ten seconds...Dragon Time not normal time. This allows him to land on or get by fast-moving objects, or to cover distances in a required amount of time that he can't naturally for any reason, as well as to attack enemies faster than they can him. He is not invulnerable while it's in effect though, and he must also wait about ten normal real-time seconds for it to recharge between uses, the recharge time being much longer than the period of effect because of this. This ability is not linked to his other powers though, so he can still use it even when unable to use the others.
He can use a Time Fury, but this is a self-preservation move, sealing himself and anyone close enough inside a crystal, where he'd sleep until it was smashed open again. This also keeps him from aging and he could theoretically be left to sleep for eternity if not found and awakened.
Dark Spyro
Being a purple dragon has left Spyro extremely vulnerable to dark powers and having been directly exposed to them has created a powerful dark persona within him. Now, either when exposed to high amounts of dark power or suffering from extreme amount of negative emotions like rage or unresolved grief, he'll transform. His purple scales turn completely black while his eyes glow white and a dark aura surrounds him. In this form no one is safe from him and he can and may destroy anyone in his path if they don't get out of the way first. His default element is a corrupt form of Convexity, but he also uses several abilities he can't while not dark, such as the ability to levitate and possibly attack with inanimate objects.
Melee: Aside from Spyro's basic melee skills, he has the ability to attack in lightning-fast claw strikes and warp between and around close-by enemies, making him hard to hit while dealing heavy damage.
Convexity Breath: Not as powerful as the uncorrupted form, it acts more like a laser and can still easily kill weaker targets. Creatures that are large or powerful will find that longer exposure to this breath very slowly turns them to stone.
Fury: Spyro releases three powerful dark energy pulses. The first turns anything it hits to stone, while the other two decimate the statues, turning them to nothing but tiny rubble.
Spyro is a young dragon who is good at heart, curious and eager to find his place in the world, but also largely accepting of the world around him when others aren't suffering...especially those he cares about.
